A police officer identified as George Tanga has been hacked to death by suspected street child.

The deceased had been deployed to guard Jinja Taxi Park Police Post. The incident happened on Thursday morning around 5am.

According to Daily Monitor newspaper, Tanga’s colleague who preferred anonymity claim the officer was killed by one of the street children he had earlier arrested for stealing iron bars.

“While on night duty, he arrested street children with iron bars and brought them to his post. Unfortunately, one of them had a machete and hacked him at the back of his neck,” the deceased’s colleague told the local daily.

It remains unclear whether the deceased had been deployed alone at the Police Post at the time he was killed.

Patrick Ssentongo, a boda boda cyclist in Jinja Town, said after hacking the officer, the suspects left him bleeding profusely before fleeing the scene with their stolen iron bars.

Whereas Malcom Kisinyire, another resident of Jinja Town, blamed police for ‘failing security’ by not routinely carrying out patrols along black spots believed to offer sanctuary to the street children.

The Jinja Resident District Commissioner (RDC),  Eric Sakwa said, “I have always urged my colleagues in police to carry out operations where these street children stage or stay.”
