The Court of Appeal has granted bail to Jimmy Lwamafa, the former Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Public Service.
Last year in November, the Anti Corruption Court sentenced Lwamafa, Chris Obey and Stephen Kiwanuka Kunsa; all former officials of the Ministry of Public Service to Luzira Prison, after they were found guilty of causing government a shs88billion loss and abuse of office.
The trio weas accused of getting involved in the scandal in which ghost pensioners were created and billions of shillings deposited on their accounts before being withdrawn by fraudsters.
The three stole Shs88.2 billion which they hatched in the public service, smoothened in finance ministry and executed in Cairo bank where the money was finally paid out to ghost pensioners.
The presiding justice Lawrence Gidudu sentenced Christopher Obey to 10 years in jail, Lwamafa to seven years in jail whereas Kiwanuka to five years.
Days later after conviction Lwamafa and colleagues, appealed against conviction and asked court to grant them bail.
On March 27 2017, Deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma held a session and presided over hearing of these bail applications but reserved his ruling on notice.
