Mzee John Mulumba Luswata, the late father of the Queen of Buganda Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda is to be buried today at his ancestral home in Nkumba, Wakiso district.
Mzee Luswata, 81, succumbed to heart failure last week at Nakasero Hospital after a long battle with heart and kidney diseases.
On Monday, April 15, his body was taken at Namirembe Cathedral for a funeral service which was presided over by Archbishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira.
Several dignitaries from both Mengo and Central government praised the late for the services he rendered to Uganda and Buganda Kingdom.
At the funeral service, the Nabagereka asked the authorities responsible to desist from politicizing matters of health and improve the health sector, adding that despite the fact that Uganda has good doctors, the government has not supported them to perform to their best.
“All these days I have been saying if there is a way we can remove politics in the matters concerning health and diseases…. in my view if we fully support the health sector the number of people dying every day due to poor health care in hospitals will reduce,” the Nabageraka said.
She added that Uganda has good doctors who are ready to offer services to Ugandans but because of poor support, most of them have decided to go out of Uganda and look for other greener pastures.
Who is Mzee Luswata
He was born on November 22,1938 to Nelson Nkalubo and Catherine Namayaza Sebugwawo in Nkumba. He attended Kings College Budo between 1946 to 1955 before joining Kyambogo Technical College where he graduated in a certificate of Electrical Engineering.
Having graduated from Kyambogo, he continued with his studies in the United Kingdom at the Technical College of Holborn. While in England he worked with Otis Company.
He returned and worked with the Mengo government in the department of agriculture, and later in Mulago Hospital’s department of electricity and Maintenance till he retired in 1984.
After retiring he started trading in agricultural produce, and also set up hotel called JEB Café in Nkumba along Entebbe road which he has managed with his wife for over 25 years.
Together with his wife of 50 years, they had six children; Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, Nelson Kikubira Luswata, Barbra Mbalwowere Luswata Mutengu, Juliet Namagga Luswata Kinarwa, John Mulumba Luswata and Patrick Nsubuga. He is survived by 15 grandchildren.
