As school re-open for a new term , the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, who also serves as the spokesperson for the National Unity Platform, has called on school heads and owners to reconsider the growing list of requirements being demanded from parents. In a passionate plea, Ssenyonyi expressed concern over the financial burden placed on parents, many of whom are already struggling in the current economic climate.
“Parents are struggling and schools are doing whatever it is that they want. You look at a slip of the requirements, schools are asking for very hefty tuition, they even ask for cement, pavers, tiles, etc. These children are coming to study SST and science, not construction. Why are you asking them to bring all these ridiculous things?” Ssenyonyi questioned.
He emphasized that while schools, especially private institutions, have their own financial responsibilities, it is important for them to remain considerate of the economic hardships facing parents. “The same economy squeezing you is the same economy squeezing parents. Let’s not be unreasonable,” he added.
Ssenyonyi also highlighted his previous attempts to address the issue in Parliament and with the Ministry of Education, though he noted that little action has been taken so far. He urged school authorities to show empathy towards parents and focus on providing quality education without burdening families with unnecessary expenses.
