Former Obongi County Member of Parliament, Hon. Kaps Fungaroo, has voiced his skepticism about the NRM government’s push for urbanization and the elevation of municipalities to city status. Appearing on a national television in a political talkshow, the FDC legislator criticized the government’s motives, alleging that the urbanization efforts are primarily a political tool used to win votes during election periods.
“I tend to think the motivation behind urbanization in our country is not driven by a genuine desire to serve the people,” said Fungaroo. “It often becomes a campaign mechanism during election periods, focused more on winning votes than on improving people’s lives.”
Fungaroo further suggested that the promotion of municipalities to city status is a tactic used by the government to misappropriate taxpayers’ money under the guise of development projects. His remarks come amid ongoing debates over the rapid urbanization process, which many have questioned in terms of its long-term sustainability and actual impact on citizens.
The NRM government has frequently defended its urbanization agenda, emphasizing that it is part of the country’s broader development strategy. However, critics like Fungaroo argue that such initiatives lack transparency and fail to address the real needs of Ugandans, particularly in rural areas.
As the 2026 elections draw nearer, such critiques could fuel further political debate on the effectiveness of the NRM’s development policies, with urbanization remaining a focal point of contention.
