Catholic nuns from Lira Diocese under the congregation, Missionary Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church, have hailed the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, for devoutly supporting religious causes.

The nuns were moved not only by the Speaker’s presence at their fundraising ceremony on Saturday, 2 October 2018 but also for having carried along Parliament’s sports teams that further boosted the event.

“I thank God for the Speaker of Parliament who has exhibited faith by travelling all the way to Lira together with her MPs and staff to support our fundraising for the chapel,” said Rev. Sr Sophia Asiimwe, the Superior General of the Congregation.

Sister Asiimwe told Kadaga that the occasion was purposed for raising funds for construction of a bigger chapel to accommodate the growing number of nuns, presently at 320.

“When we started 49 years ago, we were very few but now we have grown to 320 passed sisters and about 70 who are being formed,” said Asiimwe.

The chapel, Asiimwe added, is considered as the congregation’s achievement to mark its 50 years of existence to be celebrated on 12 November 2020.

Their congregation, Kadaga learnt, serves in Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Italy.

Moved with what she termed as ‘a worthy cause’, Kadaga contributed Shs 10 million on behalf of Parliament and urged MPs and staff to support the fundraiser in their capacities.

As part of the fundraiser, Parliament’s sports teams; foot ball, netball and volleyball played with the corresponding teams from Lira Diocese. Parliament won in football and netball.

The residents who attended the games used the opportunity through their Woman MP, Joy Ongom Atim, to appeal to Kadaga to back their exigent request for a blood bank.
