Hundreds of partiers and beer lovers on September 13 converged at Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala to celebrate the Global Beer Responsible Day (GBRD).
Hosted by Nile Breweries Limited, GBRD is an annual celebration dedicated to re-echoing Smart Drinking and responsible enjoyment of the company’s beers ‘among our consumers, employees, partners and the general public.’
This year’s theme is “Drink Smart Today, Celebrate Tomorrow: Let’s champion smart drinking together.”
Nile Breweries Limited is a subsidiary of AB InBev which has invested atleast $1billion across its markets in dedicated social marketing campaigns and related programmes.
According to Thomas Kamphuis, the NBL country director for Uganda and South Sudan, the harmful use of alcohol is bad not only for consumers, colleagues and families but also for the company’s consumers.
“We want to be part of the solution not the problem. Beer brings people together. It has been part of cultures around the world for centuries and we believe that everyday experience with beer should be a positive one,” he said at the function that was graced by Norman Musinga, the Traffic Commander Kampala Metropolitan Police and representatives from Uganda Revenue Authority and students from Makerere University Business School.
Onapito Ekomoloit, the company’s legal and corporate affairs director said; “We are building a company to last the next 100 years and beyond. And this will rely on thriving communities where harmful use of alcohol no longer presents a social challenge.”
Smart drinking goals are delivered through partnerships, a set of programmes and initiatives such as bar activations, awareness campaigns, social behavioural change campaigns such as No Excuse, road safety programmes and so on.
