Gen Matayo Kyaligonza has been summoned for interrogation by the police on three charges. These include wilful obstruction of a traffic officer on duty, assault and violation of traffic laws, according to police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga.

Gen. Kyaligonza, also Uganda’s ambassador to Burundi, will within this week face deputy Special Investigations Division (SID) director Mr Elly Womanya, to answer queries of assaulting Sgt Esther Namaganda almost two weeks ago in Seeta.

This after the traffic police officer stopped his vehicle for making a U-turn at a wrong point.

His two bodyguards, Lance Cpl Peter Bushindiki and Pte John Robert Okurut have already recorded their statements.
“Our investigative team will obtained a statement from Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza before Friday. Police leadership and army leadership have organised to have his statement recorded in regard to assaulting our female traffic officer,” Mr Enanga said.
“Mr. Owomanya will also record a statement from Gen Kyaligonza’s driver.”

In a video clip recorded by journalist Peter Otai that went viral, Sgt Namaganda was manhandled by Gen Kyaligonza alongside Bushindiki and Okurut.

The two were immediately arrested by Military Police.

In the aftermath, army spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire issued statement hours, condemning the soldiers’ actions.
