Months after the recovery of the cobalt 60 radiotherapy, the same machine is said to be experiencing another technical glitch according to the Uganda cancer institute.
According to Dr. Jackson Oryem the executive director of Uganda Cancer Institute, the computer system that operates the machine is currently showing error which forced them to stop it until the problem is rectified.
Dr. Jackson said the institute management has already contacted the manufacturer and an engineer is expected to fly to the country to rectify the problem within a shortest time possible and assured the country that the problem will be fixed in less than a week so that the patients resume having radiotherapy treatment.
He says the need to rectify the system error is aimed at ensuring the safety of the patients and also protect the machine from potential damage.
Oryem though says that given that the machine handles over 150 patients per day, they currently have only 50 patients scheduled to receive treatment.
Meanwhile Oryem added that they have bought new linear accelerator machine and another cobalt 60 radiotherapy machine from india which are expected to arrive in the country in about four months time to help the available cobalit 60 machine to avoid treatment disruptions.
