Following the industrial action of doctors in Uganda over low salaries and shortage of essential supplies in health facilities, the government has considered to bring in 200 doctors from Cuba.
The move has cast a shadow on Ugandan medical personnel who are asking themselves whether there is a shortage of doctors in Uganda.
On Wednesday, doctors under their umbrella body Uganda Medical Association addressed the media on their position towards the bringing in of ‘’200 Cuban doctors’’ to operate in the country.
Dr. Ekwaro Obuku president of the Uganda Medical Association scoffed at the move stressing that, “priority should be given to Ugandans first.’’.
‘’Uganda has over 1,500 specialist doctors registered with the UMDPC (Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council).” He added.
