Ministry of Health under the Uganda Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health Services Improvement Project handed over 3 vehicles worth USD140,000 to National Identification and Registration Agency (NIRA) to scale up Birth and Death Registration (BDR) services at county level across the country.
While handing over the vehicles to NIRA officials, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine urged the team to train nurses and midwives in registering births at facility level, to ensure continuity. “Please empower the health workers to continue birth registration even after the project has ended” she advised.
Dr. Atwine further added that the project should be integrated into health facilities in order to motivate mothers to deliver at health facilities.
Statistics from birth and death registration services will guide project coordinators in the number of children to be immunized, information on adolescents and cause of deaths.
One of the key objectives of the project is to scale-up Birth and Death Registration (BDR) and the primary beneficiaries of this project are women of childbearing age, adolescents and children under 5 from selected Districts in the country with a high disease burden.
These will benefit from a package of high impact quality and cost-effective Reproductive Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) interventions while communities will benefit from enhanced BDR services.
