Profile: meet Dr. Andrew Seguya the embattled UWA boss

Dr. Andrew Seguya is a certified zoo inspector who was appointed as Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) executive director in November 2012 till date, where he is heading one of the largest and dynamic wildlife conservation and management authorities in Africa with ten national parks, twelve wildlife reserves, two wildlife heritage sites (Bwindi and Rwenzori National Parks) and two man and biosphere reserves.

On the 2nd may 2017, Uganda’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) Justice Irene Mulyagonja demanding her to investigate UWA and mainly its boss Dr. Andrew Seguya over corruption, bribe, smuggling and illicit wildlife trade.

Dr. seguya studied at university of Stellenbosch, South Africa, Maastricht school of Management, Netherlands and De Montfort university, United Kingdom where he acquired a postgraduate diploma in study monitoring, degree in project management and a masters degree in general business administration and management respectively.

Seguya acted as an acting executive director of UWA for two years before he was appointed executive director, he also served as a senior veterinary officer in Bostwana for 5 years working for the government of Botswana from 2000 to 2005 where he started a community conservation initiative for wildlife conservation in the Lobatse area that had perpetual wildlife community conflicts leading to an observed increase in wildlife populations especially cheetahs in the area.

He spearheaded the protection of Botswana’s wildlife and livestock populations in the north of the country against transboundary disease that had spread in the Kaprivi Strip area and Chobe National Park bordering Angola, Namibia and Zambia and Performed disease control and veterinary public health duties for both livestock and wildlife.

Seguya served as executive director of Uganda Wildlife Education Center for 5 years and 11 months since February 2005 to December 2010 where he also grew and the financial turnover of UWEC ten fold in five years through business innovation, entrepreneurship and business process re-engineering, also worked as an assistant lecturer at the college of Veterinary Medicine, Animal resources and Biosecurity for eight years.

Dr. Seguya is an author and has published more than fifteen books which include, wild chimpanzees on the edge, facial dysplasia in wild chimpanzees, and many others and he is a member in more than six organizations in Uganda like the Federation of Uganda Employment (FUE), wildlife clubs of Uganda etc.
