International Monetary Fund’s managing director Christine Lagarde has promised to fund and support the wonderful work of Robert Katende, the founder of Katende chess foundation and a chess coach.

Lagarde said this during the IMF’s spring meeting 2017 in Washington DC, USA where the chess queen Phiona Mutesi and her coach Katende were present.

Yuasa

Lagarde discussed with Mutesi and Katende the construction of Katwe Social Centre where chess will be used to change street children’s lives.

Katende who is an engineer in civil, IT and computer by profession decided to give chance to street children to change their lives through the chess sport.

He coached the queen of katwe and used to coach children in Gulu and Lira but the Kony war disrupted his work.
