Airtel-Fufa Awards: UCU Lady Cardinal’s Nassuna in race to become best female player of the year for the second time

The 2016 Airtel Fufa female player of the year Hasifa Nassuna is among the last three player’s in contention for this year’s award according to the list released today by the Federation of Uganda Football Association (Fufa).

The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Cardinals skipper is pushing to become the first ever player to win this category for the second time since its introduction in 2015.

She helped UCU Lady Cardinals to win the 2018/19 FUFA Women Elite League and was named the Most Valuable Player after finishing as the overall league top scorer with 16 goals before scoring 3 goals as the Crested cranes finished 3rd in the just concluded CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup.

Nassuna’s other two opponents are Kampala Queens’ Fauzia Najjemba and Kawempe Moslem’s Juliet Nalukenge.

Najjemba was the top scorer at both the 2019 National Secondary Schools’ Championship in Mbale and the East Africa Secondary Schools’ Championship in Tanzania, scoring 14 and 10 goals respectively.

She Captained Mukono High School to win the FUFA Independence Cup where she also emerged the top scorer with 4 goals , scored 12 goals to help the Uganda U17 Girls’ national team to win the COSAFA U17 Championship in Mauritius before being on target twice as Uganda finished third at CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup in Tanzania.

Whereas Nalukenge helped Kawempe Muslim to win both the national and the East Africa Secondary Schools’ championship, she captained Uganda to win the COSAFA U17 Championship scoring 18 goals hence the tournament top scorer before scoring 5 goals as Uganda finished 3rd in the CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup.

The selection of these three has seen UCU lady cardinal’s defender Shadia Nankya and Lady Doves goal keeper Daizy Nakaziro voted out of the race.

In the Males category, URA’s Shafick Kajumu and Vipers Sc’s Allan Kayiwa had their journeys discontinued to pave way for Bright Anukani, Allan Okello and Mustafa Kizza.

Anukani a Proline FC player guided Proline FC to win the Star Times FUFA Big League and the Stanbic Uganda Cup becoming the MVP in the former.

Okello a KCCA fc skipper won the Star Times Uganda Premier League, the FUFA Super Cup , the CECAFA Kagame Cup and was also part of the Cranes team that qualified for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) while his club mate Kizza won the Star Times Uganda Premier League, the FUFA Super Cup and the CECAFA Kagame Cup and also took part in the Cranes qualification for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The winners shall be awarded on the 14th December 2019 at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
