Heavy rains have ravaged Hamurwa Bridge in Hamurwa Sub County, Rubanda district halting any form of transport from Kanungu to Rubanda and vice versa.

According to a notice from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) the road has been cut off due to the current torrential rains.

“UNRA would like to inform the road users and the general public that that the Hamurwa-Kanungu road connecting the districts of Rubanda and Kabale is cut off at the floating bridge due to current torrential rains” the Notice reads.

UNRA in the notice advises motorist to use Ikumba-Nfasya road as the diversion route.

Tai Ramadhan, the Rubanda District Police Commander has also alerted the general public not to use the Hamurwa- Kanungu road, warning that the increasing floods could cause risk to the users.

In October two people died and three others injured when an Isuzu ELF truck registration number UBE 344D that was transporting traders and goods from Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu district to Karukara market in Rubanda district got stuck while crossing Hamurwa bridge.

When residents petitioned President Museveni over the Road:

A group of 50 residents from Rubanda district in 2017 petitioned President Yoweri Museveni over the poor state of the Hamurwa- Kanungu road.

The road which connects villages of Shebeya, Ikumba, Mukadongo, Hamurwa Town Council, all in Ikumba and Hamurwa Sub Counties also joins Rubanda district to Kanungu district.

In a petition that was dated 28th December, 2017 the residents delivered it to the office of the president through the Prime Minister, and asked for an immediate intervention to save the situation.

Nothing has ever been done in the intervention.
