A section of Makerere University students on Friday converged at the university to offer their support to students and staff suspended from the institution by the vice chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
Donning whites caps emblazoned with ‘Where’s my Suspension’ as well as an incomplete Makerere University logo, the students declared their displeasure of Prof Nawangwe’s reign.

“Everyone is on tension and we are here to affirm to you that we shall stand with you, we shall stand in solidarity with all the administration,” one of the students, David Musiri told the suspended Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa) chairman, Dr Deus Kamunyu.
“We only have one Crested Crane instead of two because it is a sign that Prof Nawangwe has suspended almost every one to the extent of suspending a bird on our logo,” says Danson Twesigomwe.
The gallant students also had a cake to symbolise that they are not scared of the suspensions anymore.
“We are saying that suspension is simply a piece of cake,” added Siperia Molly, a student of Psychology.
Kamunyu was also served a cake by the students and asked to remain strong as ‘light is at the end of the tunnel’ for him.
“I believe that this will end but even if it doesn’t end my values as a leader will not be stampeded by those who seek for themselves and those who want to use impunity for their gains,’’ expounded Kamunyu.
On Friday January 18, 2019, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe had Dr Kamunyu and that of the administrative staff suspended for alleged insubordination and incitement.
The suspension later on led to an industrial action by the university’s staff members, who refused to lecture the students until the matter is resolved alongside their other grievances.
