Following requests from Kisoro leaders and citizens to select a family member of the late Sarah Mateke for the Woman Member of Parliament seat, NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has reassured the people of Kisoro that the party will uphold its internal processes and conduct primaries in line with its policies.
Addressing concerns over Mateke’s successor, Todwong emphasized that while the party acknowledges the contributions of the late MP’s family, NRM is committed to democratic principles that allow all qualified candidates a fair opportunity to contest.
“We appreciate the call from local leaders and citizens to consider a successor from the Mateke family,” Todwong said. “However, as a party, we remain committed to conducting transparent and open primaries that encourage freedom of choice by the people. The NRM welcomes candidates from all backgrounds, not just those within the Mateke family.”
The late Sarah Mateke, who served as Kisoro’s Woman MP, left behind a strong political legacy, and many in the district have expressed a desire for her family to continue her work. However, Todwong’s remarks underscore the NRM’s dedication to a broader democratic process, ensuring that any eligible candidate can vie for the position.
The announcement comes as the party prepares for primaries in the coming months, with the Kisoro district closely watching who will emerge as the new representative for the Woman MP seat.
Todwong’s statement has sparked discussions among both NRM supporters and local leaders, with many expressing confidence in the party’s ability to manage a fair and competitive primary election.
As the race heats up, the NRM’s focus remains on unity and ensuring that the choice of a new Woman MP reflects the will of the people of Kisoro.
