Ruhinda North Member of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa is griefing following the passing on of his grandmother Katima Tiruhongyerwa Omurara Muntu wa Kagunga.

Ms Tiruhongyerwa died after receiving news that Rt Hon Tayebwa had been elected Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

The sad news has been confirmed by Rt Hon Tayebwa through his social media pages on Sunday.

“Two weeks ago, I visited my grandmum Katima Tiruhongyerwa Omurara Munte wa Kagunga who gave me blessings and told me she had a few days to live. Upon news of my elevation to Deputy Speaker, she passed on peacefully at 99 years. Go rest and rejoice with the angels in heaven Kaka,” the newly elected Speaker stated.

NRM’s Tayebwa was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament on Friday after getting 379 votes against opposition’s Moses Okot p’Bitek who got 82 votes.

The election took place at Kololo Independence grounds, Kampala.

Tayebwa until his new role, was serving as Government Chief Whip.

On the same day, the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament, Anita Among also emerged winner for the position of Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

Among, the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament got 401 votes to defeat Bugiri Municipality legislator Asuman Basalirwa who got 66 votes.

The Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo declared Rt. Hon. Anitah Among as the new and duly elected Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, replacing the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah who passed away last Sunday in Seattle, USA where he had gone to receive specialised treatment.

In her acceptance speech, Among promised not to be Speaker for any political party but for the whole of Uganda.

“I’ll be a Speaker for the whole Uganda and everybody, not for the party (NRM). I pledge to support all members of Parliament in their respective constituencies for you to remain in Parliament,”she said.
