President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Saturday revealed the circumstances under which he will consider lifting the ban on public gatherings and curfew.
Since March last year, Ugandans have endured 9pm to 6am curfew along with a complete ban on music concerts.
Initially, a complete lockdown was imposed, with both public and private transport, places of worship, mass gatherings, markets, shopping centers and schools closed as one of the ways of curbing the spread of Covid-19 in the East African country.
There have however been a partial lifting of the ban, with the entertainment industry and night movements the only ones still under lock.
But while speaking at this year’s labour day celebrations on Saturday at State House Enteebe, Museveni assured the country the ban will be lifted only if at least 5 to 7 million people have been vaccinated against the pandemic.
“To be on a safe side, let us immunize at least 5 – 7 million people. Then I will think about lifting curfew, ” President Museveni said.
Museveni’s clarification comes at a time when a new more deadly Covid-19 variant has been discovered in the country according to the Health Ministry.
The new double mutant continues ravaging India with an increase in the death of mostly elderly patients reported.
This week, the authorities in Uganda imposed a ban on travels from India in a bid to guard against an escalation in infections from the lethal variant.
