Police officer arrested over shooting dead village council leader

Uganda Police Force has arrested one their own following the shooting to death of the secretary for information, Ssembule A zone village by police officers.

On Tuesday residents of Ssembule A zone, Kabowa, a Kampala suburb, held a demonstration expressing their dissatisfaction towards the blocking of  the village sewage route and community road by a stationery factory called  Shreeji Stationers 2009.

According to their website, Shreeji Stationers 2009 (U) Limited (SSUL) is described as ‘a leading stationery company that was established in 2009 with an aim to manufacture, import and distribute absolute office and school stationery solutions in relation to superlative quality products.

“The business initially started as a trading company (Shreeji Stationers Uganda Limited) dealing in Paper stationery and other assorted office materials and automation based at Nasser Road in Kampala city but later it established a full stationery manufacturing plant in Kampala, Uganda,” it adds.

According to witnesses, as the demonstrators tried to force their way into the premises of Shreeji Stationers 2009, Police shoot live bullets to disperse them. One of the live bullets hit David Kibuuka, who has been the village information secretary.  He died while being rushed to Mulago Hospital.

Following the incident, Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that ASP Justus Bwire, the officer in charge of Kironde Police Post, and also commander of the operation was arrested immediately and is currently detained at Old Kampala Police Station.

“The body (of Kibuka) has been taken to city mortuary for postmortem.  ASP Bwiire is in custody at Old Kampala police station as investigations,” Oweyesigire said.

He termed the protest on the premises of ‘the company that has built a strong corporate image and reputation among the Government Institutions and private corporate companies in Uganda’ as ‘illegal’.
