Opposition politician Victoire Ingabire, has demanded for an investigation into the death of her party’s spokesman.
Ingabire, the leader of the United Democratic Forces party in Rwanda on Sunday said Anselme Mutuyimana’s body was discovered in Gishwati Forest in the northwest of the country.
Mutuyimana had traveled to the region to visit his parents, she said.
“We need justice,” Ingabire said, adding that witnesses had described men in police uniforms in a red car detaining 0-year-old Mutuyimana in the western Mahoko area.
According to Bloomberg, UDF asked the state Rwanda Investigations Bureau carry out the investigations but cause of death was yet to be established, spokesman Modest Mutabazi said by phone from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
“Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Rwanda has been repeatedly accused by human-rights groups of cracking down on political opponents and the media under President Paul Kagame’s rule. Ingabire, a one-time presidential candidate, was jailed for 15 years in 2013 for conspiring against the government, before being pardoned last year.
