Police, earlier on Monday arrested Allan Ssewanyana, the Makindye West Member of Parliament. He is currently being detained at Nagalama Police Post in Mukono District.
Ssewanyana was arrested at Kiruddu Hospital after he attempted to lead Kiruddu residents into demonstration over lack of a proper sewerage disposal mechanism as well as lock down the facility.

Reports say Ssewanyana arrived at the hospital with a chain to lock the hospital but he was stopped by police and arrested.

According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, Ssewanyana was arrested for inciting violence and unlawful assembly.

“There were several avenues he could have used to address his concerns hut he failed. He is currently held at Nagalama police station as we conclude investigations,” Onyango said.

The $10.3m (about sh26b) facility was completed in December 2015 and upgraded from a health Centre IV to hospital status. It has a capacity for 170 in-patients. The number of patients has, however, exceeded that capacity, catering for patients from as far as the Islands of Katosi who use boats to land at Ggaba beach.

Last year, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) notified the management that the hospital about its intention to be closed.

According to the notice of closure signed by the director of public health, Dr. Daniel Okello, the move is intended to avert the spread of diseases, such as cholera.
