Sports scribes Patrick Kanyomozi and Rita Aliguma will battle for the post of Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) president when members go to polls in November to elect a new leadership.

Kanyomozi, together with the newly married Aliguma, have served the current regime as General Secretary and Vice President respectively. They hope to replace New Vision sub editor Sabitti Muwanga, whose two-year term has come to an end.

Aliguma announced her intebtion to vie for the highest post in the sports’ scribe body today.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank you for the love and support you have shown me over the years as the first female vice president of Uspa. Giving me your trust and a chance to serve you was a great milestone and I don’t take it for granted,” she posted on Uspa social media pages.

She added: “Ladies and gentlemen, during my term of service as your vice president, so much has been achieved and a lot more in the pipeline. We need to accomplish what we have started. Making Ugandan Sports journalism better – from individual level all through to the association.”

Kanyomozi, a commentator with KweseTV as well as Sports Editor at the NMG-owned KFM launched his manifesto last week, promising, to among others help journalists attain formal training in new media operations, increase sponsorship and corporate relations as well as help financially empower sports scribes.

“Most of our members are sports journalists out of passion rather than training. Much as they do their work properly, there is need for formal training. I have had fruitful discussions
with two universities that have expressed willingness to offer convenient and cost friendly courses,” Kanyomozi says in his manifesto.

Uspa was founded 48 years ago by Fred Ssekito. Other former presidents include Mark Namanya, Douglas Mazune and Joseph Kabuleta among others
