Cloth traders in Kampala under their umbrella body Nabugabo Traders Association on Wednesday booed officials from Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) who had met them to explain the organization’s plans of checking all clothes being imported into Uganda in a bid to improve on their standards.
Officials from UNBS led by the deputy Executive Director in charge of compliance John Paul Musimami had met the traders at JBK hotel in Kampala to inform them about their intentions of checking all imported clothes starting from 15th of September which angered the traders who in turn started exchanging words with the officials.
The angered traders vowed to even petition parliament over the policy which they say was done without consulting them.
Musimami said they have always confiscated substandard clothes and they have done operations in the city and it’s the reason they have decided to put-up a policy of checking for substandard goods from 15th September.
Musimami says they are not money oriented but they’re intending to save the country’s economy because traders are only enriching other countries economies as many buy short lived clothes.
