Winnie Madikizela Mandela is dead, says sources in South Africa.
Winnie died aged 81. She was the former wife of former president the late Nelson Mandela.
The female apartheid icon divorced Mandela after he was released from prison after accusations of infidelity.
Winnie will be remembered for her fight against apartheid, which ushered in blacks into power from white supremacists. She was controversial figure in South Africa, and Mandela’s harsh critic for what she argues betrayed the struggle so many South Africans shed blood for.
Makerere University early this year awarded her an honorary doctorate but she was unable to attend the event.
