Today thousands of people flocked Mucwini in Kitgum District to remember Archbishop Janani Luwum who was murdered 41 years ago under the orders of the then President Iddi Amin.

Among the notable people who attended the event were Rt. Rev. Chris Edmondson and his wife Susan Edmondson of Canterbury, 17 Church of Uganda Bishops, government officials, politicians to mention but a few.

Hill Water

Archbishop Stanley Ntagali was the preacher for the day. He quoted a wise Christian leader who once said, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”

The theme for the memorial service was from Isaiah 43:18~19. “Behold I am doing a new thing.”

Archbishop Ntagali said God is doing a “new thing” in Uganda today.

“God is, once again, pouring out His Spirit in revival. He is raising up a new generation of leaders who will lead in spirit and in truth…just as Janani Luwum did. The “blood” of Janani Luwum planted the “seed” of revival for the church in Uganda, and revival is the “new thing” that God is doing in Uganda,”

He said Janani Luwum did not die in vain. The things he stood for should be the things we should stand for today.

“The Bible says, “Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.” (Gen 4.10) Janani Luwum’s blood still cries out today for the people of God to be serious about their personal commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, to have personal integrity, and to live a sacrificial life,”

Archbishop Ntagali emphasised the power of the gospel that promotes Justice, reconciliation, brings repentance and forgiveness of sins, brings unity in communities and in the church of Christ. He reminded the pilgrims that Unity is strength.

The Guest of Honor was the Prime Minister of Uganda, The Right Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda. He said that Janani Luwums death is being celebrated because it marked a pivotal turning point in the liberation of Uganda.
