Government has approved Uganda Airlines and it will start its operations in October this year.
The development was unearthed by Captain Mike Mukula, who said the airlines will have ultra-modern aircrafts.
He tweeted,” Uganda Airlines has been approved by cabinet and will be up and flying by October this year >> the flying crane will have ultra-modern aircrafts * watch this space as NRM implements it’s manifesto,”
Meanwhile, for over two decades , Uganda has been without a national airline. This has left its citizens with a costly option, of buying air tickets from foreign airlines.
In 2016, President Yoweri Museveni directed Minister for Works and Transport to conclude discussions with investors to help Uganda start a national airline as a matter of urgency.
The Uganda Airlines, which was established in May 1976 under the Idi Amin government, was in 2001 liquated over heavy debts that stood at a tune of more than $6m (about Shs21b). The debt had been reduced from $12m (42.8b).
The liquidation, a painful reality, did not settle in well with a number of stakeholders, who blamed government for deliberately killing the airline.
