The Government of Uganda has signed grant agreements with The Global Fund worth USD478 million for the implementation period of 2018-2020 to support Uganda’s fight against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria epidemics.
The signing ceremony was held under the theme “Quest for Improved Health Service Delivery” at Hotel Africana, in Kampala.
The Global Fund is a unique, public-private partnership and international financing institution dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to support programs for prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as strengthening health systems.
During the launch of the new Global Fund grant, Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda noted that this level of funding implies that Uganda’s portfolio of the Global Fund has increased by over US$ 57m from the funding received under the previous grant of US$421m. “It’s my pleasure to note that the funding from Global Fund to the Government of Uganda is the highest ever received among the African countries. This is a sign of confidence which our Partners have in the country systems” Rugunda said amidst applauses.
Hon. Rugunda appealed to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MOFPED) to ensure that Government meets its counterpart funding obligations in order for the population to receive a full package of the programmed medicines and medical supplies under the Global Fund Grants.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to urge the responsible officers to focus on preventive measures especially at household level in order to realize significant improvement in HIV, Malaria and TB indices and as a deliberate effort to cut down the cost of health service delivery” Rugunda urged.
Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng applauded efforts from Global Fund in achieving sustainable health indices. “The grants we are signing today to cover the period 2018-2020, will continue to consolidate the gains and achievements from the previous grants and increase coverage of interventions across the country and to reach to all beneficiaries” she said.
