The Catholic Church has defended Bishop Robert Muhiirwa of Fort Portal Diocese following a circulated message on social media purportedly to have been issued by the religious leader using derogatory language against some political leaders who are pushing for the lifting of age limit cap from the constitution.
According to Rev. Fr Fredrick Douglas Waako, the Director Communications of the Fort Portal Diocese, it is true that the Bishop made some remarks concerning the current political climate in the country for the purpose of guidance as a religious leader but is never insulted any political leader.
“Whereas it is true that Bishop has of recent made some remarks concerning the current political climate in the country for the purpose of guidance as a religious leader, it is not true that the Bishop insulted anyone,” noted Rev. Fr Waako.
“We categorically state that the message on social media is false and maliciously attributed to Bishop Robert Muhiirwaand should be treated with contempt,” he added.
Below is the correct statement from Bishop Muhiirwa;
“The word of God must not be played with. The leaders of this country must not joke with the Bible. They held a bible in their right hand and swore to defend the constitution. Therefore, with my authority as a Bishop of the Catholic Church, the constitution must not be altered to fit desires of an individual. The leaders must without question defend the constitution because they used the word of God to swear.”
