National Social Security Fund boss Richard Byarugaba is a happy man. The former banker is becoming the longest serving managing director of NSSF after getting his contract renewed for five more years.
In the past, being NSSF top man meant you were either to end up fired early, jailed or fleeing the country on accusations of mismanagement.
The NSSF board says it is very happy with Byarugaba’s performance and see the Fund as high flying. However the same board is unhappy with his deputy Geraldine Ssali who seen as a stubborn kid at the multi-billion shilling Fund. Ssali, now sacked, fell out with the board after she sued it together with Byarugaba and the minister of Finance Matia Kasaija for sending her into forced leave with an intention of firing her. She ran to court and won her right back at the Workers House. However, she could not extend her appointment which is left to the discretion of the board to renew or terminate it.
Byarugaba has officially got his contract renewal, and this time round not just for three years, but a full five years to oversee a number of projects including the multi-billion shilling housing project in Lubowa.
In the same announcement for Byarugaba, Finance boss was Patrick Ayote was promoted to deputy MD, replacing Geraldine Ssali who was showed the exit door. Watchdog broke this story too.
