Uganda, South Sudan top army commanders meet in Kampala, talk collaborations

The Ugandan and South Sudan top most military bosses have met in Kampala for a security meeting.

The Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi on Monday held a meeting with his SPLA counterpart, General James Agongo Mawut at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MoDVA) headquarters Mbuya hill, the suburb in the east of Kampala.

Gen Agongo who inspected a guard of honor mounted by Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) was accompanied by his assistant Chief of Defence Forces for Operations, Training and Intelligence Lt Gen Malual Ayom Dov, Maj Gen Koul Deng Abot the Director General International and Public Relations, Maj Gen Akol Majok Nyigan from SPLA Headquarters among others.

The two military leaders exchanged views on the current situation in South Sudan and further discussed strengthening working relations between the two countries.

The meeting applauded the current dialogue between the various political actors in South Sudan aimed at building lasting peace and stability.

On the UPDF side, the meeting was attended by the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces (DCDF) Lt Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, the Commander Land Forces Maj Gen Peter Elwelu and the Joint Chief of Staff Maj Gen Joseph Musanyufu among other senior UPDF officers.

Uganda was the first country to respond to the war in South Sudan after President Salva Kirr and his deputy Dr Riek Machar fell out leading to spilling of blood and displacement of people. Uganda entered its troops in 2013 into South Sudan a move which saved the newest country on the continent from a genocide. When the situation stabilised and the with winds of peace-talks hovering over Juba, the capital of South Sudan,  Uganda was asked to pull out of South Sudan. The situation has however remained volatile since UPDF left the war-laden country
