Bank of Uganda officials led by Governor Emmanuel Mutebile are currently appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) over the bank’s expenditure on external lawyers despite having a legal department in a case where it accuses city businessman Sudhr Ruparelia of siphoning shs400 billion from Crane Bank.

According to the committee chairperson Abdu Katuntu, BoU did not need external lawyers since it has its own legal department.

“Even filing a caveat, bank of Uganda has to get external legal opinion, yet there is a legal department,” said Katuntu.

Apparently BoU is being represented by Timothy Masembe’s MMAKS and David Mpanga’s AF Mpanga Advocates in the Sudhir case.

Masembe and Mpanga have been retained by the Central Bank and the tax payers money has been paid upfront to the two law firms to ensure Sudhir pays the money BoU wants him to pay.
