Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has refused to hand over the newly acquired cancer machine to Uganda Cancer Institute over unpaid tax.
The Cobalt 60 Teletherapy machine was supposed to be unveiled today on Wednesday at Radiotherapy Unit in Mulago National Referral Hospital but unfortunately it was nowhere to be seen and it was revealed that URA refused to release the machine.
According to Dr. Jackson Orem, one step was not fulfilled thus they were not able to attain the machine as earlier communicated.
“We are sorry to inform you that some one step was not fulfilled and we couldn’t have the machine here. The event has been postponed,” Dr. Orem told journalists shortly after the disappointment.
Uganda’s only radiotherapy machine broke down in March last year, leaving nearly 2,000 patients without any proper treatment.
