Amelia Kyambadde, Minister of Trade industry and cooperatives has declared Uganda as a no trading zone for fishing nets manufacturing industries for a one year investigation about their products.
Kyambadde said that poor quality fishing nets have destroyed the lakes that there are no longer fishes in the lakes.
“We are banning the importing of fishing nets so that we first checkout their quality before allowing our fishermen to use them.” Kyambadde said.
She further added that the government is going to start investigating Ugandan industries which manufacture fishing nets to eradicate poor fishing methods in Uganda.
“We are going to check island per island, lake per lake to see the quality of fishing nets our fishermen use and also the weight of the fish they catch.” Kyambadde added.
Kyambadde concluded that whoever is found with poor quality fishing nets is going to face imprisonment.
