MPs are in plans of probing steel companies over tax evasion.

MPs say that the steel sector has evaded a lot of taxes from the government which has caused a huge loss to the country.

MPs add that Uganda lost taxes worth shs300 billion in steel sector in 2013 only, which affects the country’s economy, and in 2016 Uganda lost shs1.5 trillion in the same sector.

The accused Steel companies allegedly evaded taxes through importing raw materials and disguise them in order not to pay taxes.

Odonga Otto said that this issue should also involve the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for not taking it’s responsibility as a tax body.

Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze added that URA should also be investigated for the failure to do its job yet tax evasion is a serious crime.
