I almost died of depression – Former Obsessions’ singer Hellen Lukoma

Singer and actress Hellen Lukoma has revealed that she almost died of depression during her pregnancy.

Lukoma, who in January introduced and later married her manager Kaka Anywar, gave birth to a four-kilogramme baby in August.

The former Hostel actress also revealed that she dropped her ‘Hellen’ name for “Hilal” following her Muslim marriage and now going by the name Hilal Lukoma.

On Friday, she told NTV’s Mwasuze Mutya host Faridah Nakazibwe that when the pregnancy was about three months, she was diagnonised with fibroids that needed to be operated upon.

“I was told the odds of my child dying were high and that I needed to be operated upon,” Lukoma, who did not want to know the sex of her baby, said.

“I was so depressed after the operation that I spent most of post operation time indoors. My sisters would come to try and get me out of the house but I just could not get myself to do it.”

She gave birth via c-section, which she claimed saved her life and given the chance, she’d give birth again to many more children.

“I had to be operated upon in order to save a life. My child is a miracle.” She said, with tear flowing down her cheeks.

But that was not the most difficult part of her pregnancy.

According to the former Obsessions and HB Toxic singer, two weeks to birth, she was saddened by an internet rumour claiming that she had lost her child.

“People bashed me. ‘why did you even hold a party yet you had lost child?’ they said. At one point even Bad Black called me to say ‘are you okay?’. I said I was’” Lukoma said amidst tears.

“I want my child to be proud of me. I want to do only good things for him. For all they (media) have said about me, I want only the best for him.”
