Luwero eye patients to receive free treatment

The Icare Foundation working in association with the Uganda Ophthalmology Society and the North Indian Cultural Association have organized a 3 day free eye camp in Luwero District.

The camp is will officially commence on 22nd Friday and end on 24 September, 2017 at Luwero Center IV under the theme ‘Your Eyesight is our Insight’.

According to Isaac Kigozi, the Icare Foundation Managing Director, a medical team of four senior ophthalmologists surgeons and 10 doctors will screen more than 1000 people in those three days.

“Our medical team comprised of four senior ophthalmologists surgeons and 10 doctors, will in these three days screen more than 1000 people,” Kigozi revealed adding that, “Because Luwero has had a huge backlog in the ophthalmology department, we already have 200 patients on waiting since 2015 and they are scheduled to be worked on during this camp,”

Aisha N. Ahmad, the Icare Foundation Head of Communications said the team will set up three operating tables in the theatre which will allow them do at least a good number of surgeries per day.

On top of that, the team will also offer diabetes and hypertension screening for walk in individuals as well as do sensitization on how to prevent and deal with different eye diseases.

With reference to the statistics provided by Dr. Sarah Ogobi, who is in charge of the Health Center, Luwero District as of June 2017 had 272 cases of refractive error, 270 cases of cataracts, 147 cases of glaucoma, 167 cases of tumors, 4 cases of blindness and 1354 cases of other eye conditions.

The camp will officially be launched by Minister without portfolio Hajj Abdul Nadduli on 23rd Saturday and it will be graced by a number of dignitaries.

The Eye Camp is proudly sponsored by Lions Club Kampala Central and NRM Diaspora.
