Following several reported cases of land grabbing, corruption tendencies and escalated domestic violence in Kagadi, the area Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nicholas Kamukama Kaine and his Deputy Benjamin Tumusiime have sounded a stern warning to perpetrators of the said vices to stop forthwith or else face the wrath of the law.

Speaking at a local radio station, Kagadi-Kibale Community Radio (KKCR) based in Kagadi district, Kamukama expressed concern over some people who use their wealth influence to grab the inherited land of the vulnerable groups such as the orphans, widows, elderly and people with disabilities saying they risk prosecution in courts of law. He disclosed that he is on ground implementing President Yoweri Museveni’s directive through the district security committee of halting any unjustified land evictions.

He noted that hundreds of people from different areas in the district have approached his office reporting eviction threats, saying that he will work hard to settle their matters to enable them enjoy their rights as citizens of Uganda. He cautioned people involved in dubious moves of acquiring illegal land titles in order to evict innocent people that government will find the lasting solution for them.

“We are closely monitoring and investigating cases of land grabbing coupled with corrupt tendencies and after our investigations are done we shall ensure justice. I have also learnt of some elements of sectarian tendencies based on tribal, ethnicity and religious sentiments which are counterproductive,’’ said Kamukama.

The RDC called on the community members to come up as whistle blowers over corruption tendencies in the district in order to wipe out vices by opportunist and selfishness in the district.

Benjamin Tumusiime, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) added that the rampant domestic violence resulting from alcoholism and polygamous marriages has been discovered as a conduit to poverty, murder, divorce, teenage pregnancies and high school drop outs.

“The period I have spent in Kagadi, I have found out that cases of domestic violence are rampant, ranging from women battering, oppression, harassment, dishonesty, property grabbing, infidelity and separation of couples,’’ said Tumusiime.

He called on local leaders, clergy, police, probation department to work as a team with the office of the Resident District Commissioner to ensure transparency and justice to the victims.

“The office of Resident District Commissioner is always open for every individual with a problem beyond local council officials. Our office is non-sectarian, and thus those who think will use our office to trade sectarianism based on tribal, ethnicity and religious sentiment are doomed,’’he said.
