The Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Catholic Diocese Joseph Anthony Zziwa has appealed to the government to put in place measures to reduce the price of commodities in the country.

According to Bishop Zziwa, the increasing cost of fuel has sparked a rise in the prices of household items and negatively affected the livelihood of the citizens as many cannot afford the cost of basic necessities like soap, sugar, and cooking oil among others.

Bishop Zziwa’s appeal adds voice to other citizens and leaders who have decried the rising prices of necessities which have affected the capacity of the people to afford household items for domestic use. The cost of soap has more than doubled in recent weeks from 3500 Shillings a bar to 7500 Shillings in most parts of the country.

The prelate made the appeal while preaching during Easter Sunday prayers in Mityana and described the celebrations as a period for leaders to think about those they are leading and deliver them from suffering. He also asked the believers to emulate Jesus’ forgiveness and also denounce sin that has culminated in murder, domestic violence, discrimination, and slavery which are all prevalent in the country.

According to the Bishop, Christians and people of goodwill must live the message of the resurrection by being each other’s keeper and messenger of peace, shunning evil, and fulfilling the commandment of love so that Christ’s victory might not be in vain.

“We are called to live a life in the Spirit and bring the Good News of the resurrection to a world fractured by violence, suffering, rejection, slavery, oppression, discrimination, hatred, jealousy, corruption, embezzlement and all forms of avarice. In other words, we are called to be salt of the earth and light of the world.”

Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba said that this year’s Easter is a unique one after the re-opening of all sectors of the economy and that the big turn up for prayers is a sign that everything is getting better. In relation to commodity prices, Nabakooba said that the government is laying strategies to reverse the situation and stabilise commodity prices.

Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament Francis Zaake said that leaders have to set priorities to benefit the citizens, adding that although a lot is being done, it is not for the benefit of the people of Uganda.
