KCCA FC have been drawn against local league new comers Wakiso Giants in what will be the stand out fixture of the preliminary round of the second edition of the Super 8 football tournament.

The year’s tournament is scheduled to kick off on July 24th to August 26th. KCCA are defending champions of both the Uganda Premier League and the Super 8.

The tournament pits together the top six sides from the previous season of the UPL against the top two placed sides from the Big League – the second tier division

Vipers SC, who decided against featuring in the tournament last season will have a chance of asserting their revenge against Proline who knocked them out of the Uganda Cup last season.  Proline are the Big League Champions.

Mbarara City will lock horns against Uganda Revenue Authority while Onduparaka will host Tooro United in the other fixtures following a draw that was held on Monday in Kampala.

This time round, there has seen a change in format where each team is assured of playing three games.

The winners of the respective first-round games will qualify to face off in the semifinals before the victors in the respective semis, go on to play the final.

However, the losers in the first round, will face off in the semis before the respective victors lock horns in the placement final.

As well, the tournament sponsors Uganda Breweries Limited through their brand Pilsner have confirmed that they have doubled the tournament prize monies from Shs30 million to Shs68 million.

The Shs68m will be shared by the respective teams as per their final positions with the winner walking away with Shs20m, runners’ ups Shs12m, third place Shs10m and the fourth Shs8m. The fifth to eighth-ranked teams will get Shs6m, Shs5m, Shs4m and Shs3m, respectively.

Speaking at the launch, UBL head of Beer, Estella Muzito said that it is a privilege for Pilsner to help in the development and growth of football in the country.

“Football as we all know is Uganda’s biggest sport and we are proud to be part of the growth of it locally through the Pilsner Super 8. We look forward to an exciting and competitive tournament that will enable clubs test each other as they prepare for local and continental action.” Muzito said.

Pilsner Lager already sponsors the Player and Coach Awards in the Uganda Super League. KCCA defeated Onduparaka 2-0 to lift the trophy during last season’s final.

-Proline FC vs Vipers SC
