The Federation of Uganda Football Association (Fufa) has confirmed that Uganda Police FC head coach Abdallah Mubiru will take charge of Uganda Cranes during the 2019 African Championship qualifiers (CHAN).
During FUFA’s press conference on Wednesday, federation head Moses Magogo confirmed that Mubiru will be assisted by Onduparaka coach Charles Livingstone Mbabazi and former Cranes captain Geofrey Massa while former Cranes keeper Sadiq Wassa will join as goal keeping coach.
This comes days after former Cranes coach Sebastian Desabre and FUFA agreed to terminate the former’s employment contract by mutual consent with Desabre later named as head coach at Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
Mubiru and team were entrusted by Desabre to take charge of the Cranes team that played at this year’s Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) tournament in Durban, South Africa as the Cranes were in preparations for the Afcon 2019 in Abu Dhabi.
The Cosafa Cranes failed to win any games and were eliminated via penalties at the quarter final stage by Lesotho and again by South Africa in the plate semi-finals.
Mubiru’s first challenge lies against Somalia in the preliminary round of CHAN qualifiers with the first leg expected to take place on July 26 in Mogadishu with the second leg to be played in Kampala a week later on August 2.
The winner of the qualifiers will play against the winner between Burundi and South Sudan for a place at the final tournament that will be played in Cameroon in January 2020.
At the same press conference, FUFA announced that all technical positions at the U23, U20, U17 and the senior Cranes male teams remain vacant with applications for the positions now open.
