Boxing Day in Kabale will be boxing day, literally. The western Uganda district will for the first time host a kickboxing fight.
The sport has been gaining traction in Uganda, particularly in Kampala and Mbarara.
This time round, the people spending their Christmas holiday in Kabale will have the opportunity to watch one of their own Alex Matsiko fighting Egypt’s Mohammed Nasir. Matsiko with 19 fights – 15 wins and four losses – will challenge Nasir, a tested fighter with 54 fights under his belt but only five losses.
The other major fight on the day is between Mbarara-based Mbata Ausi and Mohammed Ibrahim. Mbata is the underdog, having taken part in only seven bouts, losing once to Moses Golola while Ibhahim has 22 fights under his belt.
Eight other fights featuring local fighters are also scheduled to happen on the day.
The ‘Dance of the Lions’ charity fight will take place at Agaba Center, an entertainment spot located in Kigonzi cell in Kabale town.
Mr Amon Mugume, the CEO of Ampropen, the organizers says, proceeds will go towards equipping two health centers with beds and beddings.
“We are donating proceeds to Kamukira Health Center IV and Kitooma Health Center II,” Mugume says.
Mugume explains that Kitooma is the birth place of Alex Matsiko as well as dignitaries such as Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda and Archbishop Stanley Ntangali of the Church of Uganda.
