As Uganda approaches the general elections in 2026, Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda, has issued a heartfelt call for peace and unity among citizens. Known for his commitment to leadership and community stability, Mayiga’s remarks came amid rising tensions and political uncertainties that often accompany election cycles.
Mayiga expressed deep concern over the potential for violence during the upcoming presidential, parliamentary, and local council elections. Drawing on historical context, he pointed out that past elections in Uganda have frequently been marred by unrest, leading to significant loss of life and property. He warned that a violent election environment is not only detrimental to democracy but also poses a serious threat to national stability and social cohesion.
“An election marked by violence is a recipe for anarchy,” Mayiga stated. “It is a situation that no Ugandan would wish to witness, and we must do everything in our power to prevent it.” He highlighted the need for all political players to engage in constructive dialogue and foster an atmosphere of trust and respect, irrespective of differing political opinions.
Mayiga’s appeal also resonates with various stakeholders in Uganda, including civil society, religious groups, and international observers, all of whom are advocating for a fair and transparent electoral process. Many are urging the government to ensure that security forces remain neutral and focused on maintaining peace rather than suppressing dissent.
As the political landscape evolves in the lead up to the elections, Mayiga’s message serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility Ugandans share in shaping their nation’s future. He urged citizens to prioritize dialogue over division and work together to uphold the values of democracy and peace.
