Two M23 Rebels Sentenced Over Illegal Entry Into Uganda

The Chief Magistrates Court presided over by His Worship Kenneth Komakech in Kisoro District has sentenced Two M23 rebels to Kisoro government prison for 1 year and 9 months each over illegal entry into Uganda.

The convicts are Innocent Murwanashaka and Innocent Nkurunziza from the Democratic Republic of Congo who are accused of entering Uganda illegally on 29th Sept, 2023 in Nyabwishenya sub-county Kisoro district.

During the examination of the state prosecutor Best Kemigisha Niwagaba with the witness from Kisoro police station, Inspector of Police John Bosco Ahimbisibwe working with the detective crime intelligence department told the court that the accused on 29th Sept 2023 entered Uganda and was caught by residents of Nyabwishenya and handed over to the Nyabwishenya police station in charge wanadi.

On 30th Sept, 2023 the Kisoro DPC, Assistant DISO, and IP John Bosco interviewed them and revealed that they were going to Kampala for a casual working job after leaving over the guns in the camp for the situation becoming worse.

While appearing in court yesterday the State Prosecutor of the government requested his worship to offer a real sentence.

In the statement, the magistrate revealed that the court condemns such cases of illegal entry into Uganda without valid documents. He sentenced each 1 year and 9 months in jail considering the 1 Month and 20 days they had spent on a remand.

His Worship said that the convicts shall be handed over to authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo after serving the sentence.
