Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and the Uganda Police Force have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to offer emergency services to the officers in the Region.
Commissioner of Police, Ernest Martin Abilu and Dr, Celestine Barigye, the Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital signed the Memorandum on behalf of the Uganda Police Force and Hospital respectively. The event took place on Friday.
According to Abilu, the move is aimed at ensuring that police personnel are not worried about health complications in the line of their duties. He says that the emergency services have been limited to Kampala, which required police personnel to travel to access the services.
He said under the agreement Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital will offer services that include treatment for non-communicable diseases like cancer, injuries sustained in the course of work and accidents among others. He noted the MoU covers serving police officers, their spouses and biological children.
Dr Celestine Barigye, the director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, said that the MoU brings a slight improvement in the treatment of the officers, noting that the hospital has been treating the officers on a private basis.
He said that the MOU provides modalities on how to offer the services.
An officer privy to the MoU said that they have been paying charges depending on the ailments ranging from Shillings 25,000 but the signing of the MOU offers them a huge relief.
