STATE HOUSE, ENTEBBE: As Uganda celebrates its Independence month, more world leaders including the United Nations Secretary General, The Presidents of Italy, Iran and Nicaragua are among some of the world leaders who have congratulated Uganda on its Independence Day commemorated on October 9, every year.

The President of the Republic of Italy Sergio Mattarella said the recurrence of the National Day celebration offers him the delightful opportunity to bring sincere wishes for the prosperous future of the people of Uganda.

“Our countries are bound by historical ties of friendship and fruitful dialogue on issues of common interest, starting with the stabilisation of the horn of Africa and the region of the great Lakes. In sharing together with the rest of the international community, long term and shared responses to the great global challenges of our time, Kampala and Rome will find new ways for deepening and strengthening our collaborative ties,” he said.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterrres, extended to the people of Uganda his warmest congratulations on the occasion of their Independence Day.

“In these challenging times, we are once again reminded of each country’s essential contribution to our global wellbeing. As we work together to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, we must use the recovery to build more resilient, sustainable and just societies. We must also take bold action to address the climate emergency and advance efforts to achieve sustainable Development Goals,” Guterres said, adding, “On this Independence Day, I count on the Republic of Uganda to help strengthen the United Nations and build a better and more peaceful world for all.”

The Ambassador of Italy to Uganda H.E Massimilliano Mazzanti congratulated the President, his family and the people of Uganda on Uganda’s Independence Day.

“I highly value, Mr. President, our expanding partnership, which has only deepened over the last years, despite the numerous global challenges. I appreciate your initiative to build stronger ties among countries of the East African Community and improve cooperation of the region which will ensure a more open and prosperous future for the people of Uganda and the region as a whole, Amb. Mazzanti said in a message to the President, adding that Italy is proud to be a partner in these initiatives and in the battle against COVID-19.

“I look forward to seeing even more productive results from our cooperation in the coming year,” he said.

I am also confident that cooperation between our two countries can also be further strengthened at multilateral level through our common membership in the United Nations and Commonwealth. We also look forward to cooperating through the EU-Africa dialogue to open new avenues of cooperation between our countries and regions,” he said, adding, “Above all, more than one year after the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we are still in the fight against the pandemic which spared no country.
