President Yoweri Museveni is today Friday expected to address Ugandans on the situation of Covid-19 in the country.

The address will take place at 8pm and it will be aired on different radio and TV stations in Uganda.

“Fellow Countrymen, Countrywomen, Bazukulu, I will address the country TODAY at 8:00pm on a number of issues but mostly the COVID-19 situation. I call upon you to tune in to the different radio & TV stations for this address,” President Museveni tweeted on Friday.

Museveni’s address comes at a time when the pandemic situation in the country is running out of hand.

In just two days, the East African country has lost over 80 people to the virus and currently most public and private hospitals are full to capacity with Covid-19 patients.

Due to the worrying situation, a section of citizens have pleaded with the President to impose a total lockdown in order to contain the situation.

On the other hand, Uganda is running short of medical oxygen as it grapples with the ravaging pandemic.

Diana Atwine, permanent secretary at the ministry of health, said in an interview with the media on Monday that there was a high demand of oxygen due to the surge in numbers of Covid-19 patients in High Dependency Units and Intensive Care Units (ICU) across the country.

In his state of the nation address on 6th June, 2021, Museveni ordered for an immediate closure of all schools and institutions of higher Education for 42 days as one of the ways of containing the surging cases of the second wave of Covid-19.

“All teachers must vaccinate before reporting back to school after those 42 days,” Museveni noted.

“Public or cultural gatherings except for the sitting of the cabinet, legislature are suspended for 42 days,” he added.

Museveni also noted that non agricultural activities like factory, construction, shopping malls, supermarkets, taxi parks are to continue operating with Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) observation and failure to comply within a week they will be suspended.

“Marriage ceremonies to continue with maximum 20 people under strict observation of SOPs.”

“Public transport from district to district suspended for 42 days from June 10, 2021 and Interdistrict travel banned for 42 days.”
