The joint security team is accusing politicians especially those on the opposition side for staging the youth to conduct an illegal demonstration over relief food in Namugoona, a Kampala suburb.
Police’s allegation follows the arrest of two youth who were part of a group of people that had blocked the road demanding for relief food that is being distributed by the government amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
Police alluded that although they were claiming to be hungry, they were doing the demonstration unlawfully. They added that youth cannot stage such a demonstration unless they are encouraged by politicians who want to take advantage of them.
“These youths were mobilised by the politicians to demonstrate to show that the government has not provided them with food and yet the distribution exercise is still going on. We have been informed that the group was mobilised by a politician who is intending to contest for Parliamentary elections for Rubaga North,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.
He cautioned the youth and other people to avoid being used to hold unlawful protests as this exposes their lives to COVID-19 since they all know that crowds are one of the avenues in which the diseases quickly spread.
According to Onyango, the government’s plan is that all the vulnerable people benefit from the relief food distribution. And he appealed to members of the public to remain calm because the team supplying food will reach them at any time.
The suspects in custody are identified as Wasswa Eria and Mukwaya Farouk, all residents of Namugoona, Rubaga Division, Kampala.
