Uganda Police have told Bodaboda cyclists to safeguard their motorcycles especially while parking in public places like bars and cinema halls.
The caution follows the arrest of a notorious bodaboda robber Daniel Muhanguzi in Bushenyi district. The suspect had so far stolen more than four motorcycles in Mukono.
According to Police spokesman Fred Enanga, Muhanguzi stole the bodabodas from public places such as betting areas, bars, restaurants and cinema halls.
“When we got intelligence indicating that they were some suspected stolen motorcycles in Kizinda trading centre in Mitoma district, our task team started investigating this matter and were able to arrest Baguma Patrick whom they recovered a motorcycle from and had bought it from Muhanguzi at Shs700,000,” said Enanga on Monday.
Selling a new Bajaji Boxer worthy Shs4m at such amount left a lot of suspicions and through investigations, another second Nuwagina Jephous suspect was arrested who led police to Muhanguzi.
Police reports allude that Muhanguzi was a builder in Mukono district but after losing his job in Mukono, he started stealing motorcycles in busy places such parking lots, betting houses and then would transport them to Mbarara for sale.
“The suspect was targeting video halls and betting houses during those busy hours when people are making a lot of noise. With this we need to continue encouraging Bodaboda owners and riders to be security conscious and come up with crime prevention precautions,” Enanga urged.
He also said that to reduce bodaboda theft, owners must install tracking devices such as GPS, jammers and rockers.
“If sure measures are put in practice, it will be easier for Police to search for any stolen bodaboda.”
