The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola has said CCTV cameras installed in view of Cheap General Hardware were blocked by trucks at the store.
He added that since cameras were blocked, the identity of the criminals is still unknown.
On Wednesday afternoon, five thugs arrived on motorbikes with masked faces and gunned down three employees of the said hardware store and stole over Shs200million.
The incident left residents of Nanansana and Ugandans at large questioning the use of CCTV cameras which were unable to alert the police officers at the control centre.
However, during his speech at the high-level retreat for Uganda Human Rights Commission and Uganda Police Force top leadership at Munyonyo Speke Resort, Ochola said Police cameras were unable to see the criminal because they were obstructed by the trucks.
“Investigations into shooting in Nansana that claimed lives of people have already commenced. However, they have suffered a setback since cameras that were installed at the crime scene were blocked by trucks so were are unable to identify the criminals,” said Ochola on Thursday.
Earlier, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, had said three people had been arrested to help police in investigation.
“Ugandans should calm down. Of course, we are also using cameras to help us but this is a security matter and it’s too early for the public to judge this case. We promise that we shall get them,” said Onyango.
